PURDY, Lewis Elmer - 85, Millvale, Cumberland County, died Friday, May 5, 2000, in All Saints Hospital, Springhill. Born in Millvale, Cumberland County, he was a son of the late John L. and Mary E. (Thompson) Purdy. Prior to his retirement he was employed in the lumbering industry and worked at the Pictou Ship Yards for five years during the time of Second World War. He also worked as a carpenter, he enjoyed woodworking as his hobby. Surviving are his wife, the former Milda M. Stevens; daughter, Beverley Halliday and husband David, Williamsdale; sons, Jack Purdy and Karen, Williamsdale; Bob Purdy and wife Jean, Halifax; stepdaughter, Vonetta Chouinard and husband John, Millvale; stepson, Norman Stevens and wife Elsie, Oxford; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brother, Hubert Purdy and wife Ida, Dorchester, N.B.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by grandson, Terry D. Halliday; sisters, Doris Lloy, Christina Lloy, Mrs. Bernice Rushton, Jean Jollymore and Inez Rushton; brothers, Harold Purdy, Ernest Purdy, Leo Purdy and Ivan Purdy. Cremation has taken place at the request of the deceased. No visitation. Memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, in Allen’s Funeral Home, 60 Water St., Oxford, Rev. Claudia Keller-Hatt officiating. Burial will take place in the Millvale United Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the charity of choice.
